Fairy Show from t.A.T.u.

The movie Finding t.A.T.u. created a stir long before the premiere planned in Cannes 2008. August, 15 t.A.T.u. played a mini-concert that will be crowned with immortality in the film.

Lena and Julia not only performed their greatest hits, but also sang two new songs from the upcoming album - Little People and You and I. The singers were a bit nervous before the show. An Oscar nominee, who works for director Roland Joffe and has edited such films as «The Fugitive», «Biloxi Blues» and «Passenger 57», is now editing his latest film with working title Finding t.A.T.u.

We’re sitting in his editing room, surrounded by all the latest high tech HD/Digital equipment on the planet. Richard’s job is to sort through all the material that was shot for the film and put it together in a way that best tells the story.

We were waiting for this meeting for several weeks… Finally, hello!

Well, you know what happened? When the project first started, I had more time than I do now. When I first arrived in Moscow from Los Angeles, I pretty much said “yes” to everyone. For instance, I did an interview with Mosfilms, then, I agreed to teach two seminars for the Studio’s Assistant Director training program. After doing those things, I felt I did my share of community service and it was time to focus on editing and not be disturbed. Then of course, you guys called and wanted to meet. My instincts were to lay low and hide.

By the way, did you go to the latest t.A.T.u. gig at B1 club?

No, I didn’t. I usually try not to hang around the set. I like to stay behind the scenes and see the action from the safety of my editing room.

Is it your rule?

It’s not a rule; it’s more like a preference. I guess the reason why is that the set or location is the place where the director, the actors and the crew come together to do their work. The last thing they need is an editor walking around, tripping over cables and spilling coffee onto their laps. On occasion, I do get called to the set and asked my opinion on how something should be shot. It’s best, however, to keep visits short and let the filmmakers do their work.

Are we on schedule?

Last time I checked, we weren’t. But, due to the ambitious nature of this film, that’s not a surprise. We have over 190 Scenes and we’ve been shooting all over Moscow. It’s hard to absorb all the bumps on the road, so we probably are a few days behind. But that in a way is a good thing. That means we are not rushing to a point where we compromise making a good film. Sometimes it takes more time to get things right. It takes a smart director and good producers to realize that. Therefore, it’s better to have a good film that comes in late than a mediocre film that was made on time.

How is this film being shot in terms of equipment?

We are shooting this film in HD with the new Panavision Genesis camera. That means we are actually not shooting on traditional film. We are shooting HDSR Digital Video. Someday, in the near future, we will no longer be using the word “film” to describe movies.

One of the set assistants said that Genesis costs around one million dollars. It is true?

Actually, that sounds good but it’s not quite true. You see, you cannot buy an HD Genesis camera. Panavision and Sony invented this camera and they only let film productions companies and studios rent them out. This way they control the market. If you tried to buy the Genesis camera, you couldn’t because they are not for sale. So, in a way, the camera does become priceless. Even for a million dollars, they are not for sale.

Are all high-budget movies shot on Genesis camera in Hollywood now?

No, not yet. This is an up and coming, new way of working and it takes time for everyone to accept change. Roland was ready. He chose to shoot in HD because he was convinced that it would match the look of film and he would have more options in making it look the way he wanted.

Philip ( Philip Robertson – movie’s cinematographer – tatu.ru) agreed. Working in HD is new for me. That’s why I asked all the HD experienced people that I know for advice beforehand. That meant getting ideas and valuable information from Americans, English and Russians. It’s almost like working on the space station; it takes an international community to bring it all together.

HD video does sound like a lot of fun…

HD/Digital Video is really only a bunch of numbers. It’s a whole lot of numbers that computers crunch and change into moving pictures. This new way of working is replacing film. Light sensitive film has been around for over 100 years. But its days are numbered because the time has come where HD video has matched the look and quality of film.

Could you describe the editing process?

I come to work each day and I put the film together the way I think it should go. I let the film tell me what to do. Roland shoots his material in such a way that I can see his intentions in the film itself. It takes patience and observation but if I look carefully, the film will lead the way. Like a sculptor, you have to let the substance you are shaping tell you how to shape the object. You have to let yourself “go with the flow.” Otherwise, the work comes out forced and unnatural, and makes everything seem unbalanced.

In another interview you said that you’re doing a parallel editing – meaning you start editing right away and not when the filming process is over, like they do it here in Russia. Is it a better way?

The mindset in Russia is that the director is the boss and he or she tells everyone what to do. Everyone waits for the instructions and everything waits until the director makes a decision. This ultimately turns out to be an inefficient way of working. Another approach is to see the director more like a general rather than a dictator. His job is to command his troops and get results. His job is not to be the guy with the gun shooting at the enemy; he has trained sharp shooters to do that for him. To have the general out on the front lines shooting his gun is not the best use of his time. That’s why a director, like a general, would benefit more by having good soldiers and smart officers to help him do his job. The mindset in Hollywood is to have a director lead a creative team of people that he harnesses to help him reach his goal. He cultivates a talent pool and he allows them artistic expression. These artists accept guidance and direction and shape the film to what the director wants and needs.

That’s a good military metaphor…

And when it comes to editing, the director cannot be in two places at once. If he’s busy shooting the film, he cannot be editing. Therefore, unless someone puts the material together for him, the entire production has to wait for shooting to stop before editing begins. Roland lets me start assembling as soon as he starts shooting.

This allows him to have a full assembly two weeks after he stops shooting. Also parallel editing allows us to see what additional pieces we may need before shooting wraps.

You’re saying that in several weeks from when the shooting ends “Finding t.A.T.u.” is complete. Then how come the post-production requires 5-6 months more?

Most people don’t realize it but it takes time to make a movie. Besides editing, you also need sound FXs, music, special visual FXs, mixing, and titles to be done. All these additional elements take time to do and more people come on board the project to help make these things happen. Besides that, the director needs time to work on the editing and try to make the film the best it can be. During this period performances are evaluated, scenes are re-cut and material can be either rearranged or deleted. Whatever helps to make the best film possible is tried and tested. Sometimes the film is shown to people to get their views. The final version of the film is referred as “director’s cut”.

From what you’ve just said it’s clear that Roland trusts you. How long have you known each other?

I’ve known Roland a little over two years. “Finding t.A.T.u.” is our second film. I was impressed with Roland for quite some time.

He’s done some extraordinary work. Every shot that Roland designs is special because he bends over backwards to make things visually stimulating. Hopefully, with time, I earn more and more of his trust. Up to now he has been magnanimous in allowing me a full range of creative expression on his films.

Do you remember your first thought what you’ve heard about “Finding t.A.T.u.”

Quite honestly, we had a TV show in America in the 70’s called Fantasy Island. In that show, there was a dwarf named Tatoo. At first, I thought the film was about trying to find that dwarf. Imagine my relief when I found out it was about the rock duo t.A.T.u.!

That’s funny!

I know! I was like, why are they making a movie about him?!

When you go to the movies, do you pay attention on editing?

No not really. I like to watch the story. Just like you don’t see the words when you are reading a book, editing should be invisible and not draw attention upon itself.

Sometimes, I will force myself to pay attention to the editing, but most often I just let the editor do their magic and I sit back and eat my popcorn.

Is there a movie that you could say – yes, the editing is perfect?

Well, Alfred Hitchcock once made a movie called “Rope”. You can say that film had perfect editing because Hitchcock shot it in a way that it all plays out as one long continuous shot. I think there’s no such thing as perfect editing and you can’t really say that someone’s editing is better then another. It’s all a matter of taste. That’s why when the Academy Awards chooses a film for “Best Editing” it’s more like winning a popularity contest than anything else.

How’s “Finding t.A.T.u.” coming out?

I’ve seen almost 99% of the film so far and I am very optimistic about it. One thing I can say is it’s turning kind of… “Felliniesque”. By that I mean we have a bunch of crazy characters whose story lines are interweaving beautifully with each other. Fellini, in my mind, did that best. His films came out like poetry. With a little luck and hard work, we will achieve the same.

Are you… tired?

Yes. But I get an enormous amount of pleasure from my work. It’s worth it. Now, back to work… and no more interviews!

Mischa, by the way, what's the origin of your name? You've probably heard many times that it's Russian, but male.

It was my mom's idea to name me so. She just heard it somewhere and liked the way it sounded. My mom actually thinks that people with unusual name must have an unusual destiny.

What is your strongest impression after being two months in Russia?

Russia exceeded all my expectations. My friend warned me about cultural shock. But I didn't have it. I saw a country with an incredible culture and wonderful people. Russians are very patient and kind. I want to learn a lot from them.

And how about Russian men? Do they have any chance to win your heart?

I like Russian guys, they are very cute (Laughs) I met many attractive men in clubs, where my close friend invited me. And I won't deny that they have chances to get acquainted with me. Especially now, when I don't have a boyfriend.

Why did you decide to take part in this Russian-American project "Finding t.A.T.u."? Do you like the band?

Frankly I've never been a fan of t.A.T.u., but I got excited about the opportunity to work with them on the movie. You can't imagine how interesting Russian bands are for Americans. It's real exotics for us! I chose Roland Joffe's project also because it's an independent cinema. I don't want to be viewed as a "Californian girl" from "The O.C." show. I'm an actress who is able to play many different characters.

And what language do you speak with your partners on the movie set?

I tried to learn Russian, but, oh well, it was unsuccessful! My personal interpreter Lena helps to communicate and to pick up Russian accent. After all I have a complicated task - I must learn to speak English with Russian accent! Now I can understand some Russian expressions. Actually I like this feeling-at-home in Russia. I've recently moved from the hotel to an apartment on Stariy Arbat street.

Your apartment's conditions can be hardly compared to the hotel in Yaroslavl, where you spent two weeks. The conditions were probably "Spartan" there?...

Believe me, my Irish relatives also live quite a simple life. The only problem I had while staying in Yaroslavl is the absence of hot water. We didn't have it in the hotel for two days. But these difficulties helped me to better understand how Russians live. Actually Russia is a country of strong and clever people. And beautiful women.

Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova played in a movie about craziness of their fans.

In Moscow shooting of Finding t.A.T.u. finished – a movie about two girls - an American (Mischa Barton) and a girl from Yaroslavl (Shantel Van Santen) - who dream about becoming like their idols t.A.T.u. Will their dreams about fame come true? Even film’s creators haven’t decided yet, but the heroines’ attempt to get acquainted with Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova will be successful.

t.A.T.u. girls play themselves in the film and, of course, are going to record soundtrack for it. Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova (who is five month pregnant now) talked about their experience of getting close to their fans to the columnist of “Nedelya” Anna Fedina.

"The story in the movie is truthful"

What are your impressions from the shooting?

Lena: Excellent. We liked it a lot. This is our first experience in a serious movie, but honestly the difference between an actress and a singer is not big because when you play a concert or shoot a video, you do the same thing: try to do it so that people believe you.

Yulia: In a movie everything is a bit more realistic than in videos. Especially in this movie –I mean, it's about us. Just like the book, on which the film is based. Lesha Mitrofanov wrote it; we often party together. Maybe because of this it turned out so close-to-life.

Is it difficult to play yourself?

Y: Well no! What could be difficult? We are the same in life, on stage and in movies.

L: On the contrary, it's even easier. We have nothing to make up. The script writer came to us, asked questions; we answered and he wrote the scenes accordingly.

What news about your life will fans find out from the movie?

L: Some will find everything new, but others will decide that they already know it all about us. Difficult to predict.

Y: No, there will be new things anyway. Fans will learn something not simply about us, but about what's going on around us. How does it go in the film? We live our usual life: We have rehearsals, play concerts, sometime we visit sites of our fans and at one of them we find this song, which two of our fans wrote for us. We like the song, we want to meet these girls – and this is where their story starts. They got acquainted through the internet, came to Moscow, fell in love with us and – for us - did something stupid. You have to admit, something like this happens not often. Usually our fans come, get autographs - and "Good bye". But here people came from devil-knows-where to live in Moscow and to see us often. People will realize that such, let’s say, crazy fans do exist.

L: By the way, on the new album there will be a song which lyrics have IN FACT been taken from one of our fans. We accidentally ran into her internet blog – and now we have the song. So, the movie’s story is truthful.

"Are you real?" - "No, out of play dough"

Were there any special fans in your lives?

Y: We meet many of them so often that they have become our friends. Of course, we don't visit each other, but we hang out somewhere outside.

L: There are fans who call us on the cell phone to find out when we are in Moscow – and then come to meet us.

Y: Autographs aren't even important to them, we are just friends. But those, who arrive from far, would like to take a picture with us, get autographs or give us something as a present.

And what are the gifts?

Y: Anything - from toys to jewelry. They often write poems. They would bring huge scrap-books with love messages to us.

L: They also often draw us.

Are foreign fans like that too?

Y: It’s different. In Japan there were times we could not even go outside - at once a crowd gathered around us…

L: They take their cell-phones and start taking pictures of us....

Y: It’s not even a hundred people. They would fill up a whole street, and you have to call the police just so that you could get out of the crowd. Once in the centre of Tokyo they had to put cordons of busses around the square so we could go to our car.

Is it possible to meet you on the street in Moscow?

L: Of course. We move around without bodyguards. Our city got used to celebrities, public people walking freely. In America this may look wild if some celebrity decides to go shopping or have a snack at a cafe and doesn't take bodyguards along, but in Moscow this is absolutely normal.

Y: I, for example, like to move around alone. I absolutely don't need a bodyguard or a driver. I drive myself and I don't care how late I return home - I’m not afraid of anything. You have to live your life and have fun, and if anybody wants to protect us, they may do it on stage. When you go to good places with adequate people, who will bother you there? Who needs you? And if there are young people in some cafe, they may give you a twitch at sleeve, but it's not because they are crazy, but because people for some reason want to touch you.

L: "Are you real?" - "No, out of play dough".

Y: Out of porcelain.

Do they often touch you like this?

Y: We try to keep the distance. Star sickness has nothing to do with it. Would you like it when strangers poke you in the side, pull at the hair - is it a wig? - or check whether you’re wearing earrings or clips?

"You have to guide your children - but they should decide themselves"

Do fans wait for you at the entrance of the house?

Y: Of course. If some girls come for two days from St/ Petersburg or Tallinn, where should they go? They sit and wait until we show up. If we don't appear they spend a night near the entrance. And those, who live in Moscow, call our cell-phone, "Are you at home today? We'll stop by."

L: Sometimes, though, they want to surprise you and come without telling and we are about to leave for a tour or other place. It’s ok, our fans always understand.

Y: Why should they get offended? We are not rude to them, not rough.

L: Yes, we just say, "Come tomorrow at this time. We will come out and chat."

What would you say to fans who may come to you saying, “We want to be like you"?

Y: If it's your wish, why not? It's always nice when somebody takes you as an example, considers you an ideal and tries to look like you.

L: You always need to stay the way you are, I think. Otherwise your personality simply gets lost. You may love , respect, listen to the music, be carried away by the songs of somebody, but to copy somebody is silly. For me it's wild. You will never be another person anyway.

Y: Well, I think there's nothing wrong in it. A person copies only your appearance, but inside he or she remains the same no matter what. There never be second “you”, but if fans want to look like you - I'm for it.

L: I'm for individuality.

And would you advise your fans to get into show business?

Y: They should decide for themselves. I feel great in show business. I can't imagine the situation when I wake up in the morning - and we don't shoot the next video, don't do interviews, don’t have photo shoots, don't fly to some show.

I’m so used to it, there was not a day when I just sat at home. Even if there is nothing special going on, I try to go out to meet people anyway. Parties, presentations, hanging with fans - it would be difficult for me to live without it.

Yulia, you’re now expecting your second child. Would you like to see your children in show business?

Y: I won't push them. I can only help, let them try sports, music, drawing. Then they should decide themselves, and I will support their any choice. Usualmente nuestros fans vienen, consiguen autófrafos - y "Adiós". Pero hay personas que vienen desde Dios sabe donde, a vivir en Moscú y para vernos a menudo.
